Chaos in Venezuela

Three guns per resident. Nine out of ten murders unsolved. No toilet paper. What could go wrong?

Vivas entered Venezuela’s Military Academy in 1974, graduating as a civil engineer in 1988. Following that, he served in numerous government posts, including as the Defense Ministry’s finance director and engineering department head.
This latter post didn’t last long: while Vivas became the head of engineering in 2006, in 2007 he resigned after refusing to make his subordinates swear an oath: “Patria, Socialismo o Muerte, Venceremos!” (“Fatherland, socialism or death, we’ll overcome!”).
The ex-General claimed that forcing workers to swear such an oath violated the Venezuelan Constitution.
Since resigning, Angel Vivas has worked to combat the governments of Chavez and Maduro.
